Why a short coat is washed differently

On a short coat there is almost nothing between the shampoo and the skin. What you apply reaches it directly, without the length of hair that acts as a buffer on other coats. That is why a shampoo that degreases too harshly shows immediately: redness, itching and flaking in the days that follow.

Short hair has a second feature: it is wiry and holds very little. It gets dirty quickly on the surface but rinses out in seconds. So there is no point using more product, and every reason to rinse thoroughly.

The breeds concerned are often muscular and sporty. A Beagle, a French Bulldog, a Labrador or an American Staffordshire come back from a walk with mud rather than with knots. The problem to solve is not detangling, it is skin comfort.

How to look after a short-haired dog

Brushing still matters, contrary to what people think. A soft brush or a rubber mitt once or twice a week removes dead hair, stimulates circulation and makes the coat shine. On a short coat it is the brushing that gives the glossy look, not the shampoo.

Drying is quick, and that is the great advantage of these coats. A towel and a few minutes are enough; there is no need for a dryer except in cold weather.

My short-haired dog smells, what should I do

A short-haired dog that smells strongly is almost never the coat, it is the skin. Folds, armpits, the base of the tail and the ears concentrate moisture and bacteria, and that is where the smell comes from.

Washing more often will not fix it and may make things worse by drying the skin out. Clean the areas concerned instead, dry them well, and if the smell persists despite that, speak to your vet: a stubborn odour sometimes signals a skin infection.

How often should a short-haired dog be washed

A healthy short-haired dog is washed rarely. Every six to eight weeks is enough in most cases, and more only if it has genuinely got dirty.

Washing too often is the most common mistake on these coats. Every bath removes the sebum that protects the skin, and on a short coat that protection is already thin. A dog that scratches after several baths in quick succession is telling you exactly that.

Which shampoo for sensitive skin

Sensitive skin shows three signs: the dog scratches outside bath time, the skin reddens easily, and flakes appear a few days after a wash. On a short coat these signs are immediately visible, which is an advantage.

Take a care shampoo rather than a cleansing one, space out the baths, and rinse twice as long as usual. If the skin stays red or crusty, no product will replace veterinary advice. A shampoo washes, it does not treat a skin condition.
