Dog Brush & Accessories

Which dog brush should you choose for its coat?

It all depends on the coat: a very short coat is polished with natural bristles, a long, fine coat is gently detangled with soft bristles and a small slicker brush, a thick undercoat is worked with slicker brushes or an undercoat rake, and a curly coat is combed down to the skin after the slicker brush. Then the size of the animal matters: an XS model for a small dog, a wider model for large breeds. A brush suited to the length and type of coat works gently; an unsuitable brush pulls, irritates the skin and discourages the most sensitive animals.

To go further on caring for each type of coat, our pages very short, wire and rustic coats, short and medium-length coats, long and heavy coats and curly and voluminous coats detail the complete routine, from bath to drying.

Slicker brushes, bristles, combs, glove: what is each tool for?

• Slicker brushes have fine, angled metal pins. They detangle knots, remove dead hair and undercoat, and restore volume. They are the groomer's basic tool for medium-length, long and curly coats.
• Natural bristle brushes smooth the coat and make it shine, even over a dense undercoat. Boar or pig bristles massage the skin, spread the natural oils and nourish the coat's shine. They suit very short coats as well as finishing long coats.
• The comb checks the work: if it passes everywhere down to the skin, no knot remains. Wide-toothed then fine-toothed combs are essential on long and curly coats.
• The undercoat rake and deshedding tools, such as the Furminator, remove dead undercoat in depth during shedding: the Furminator removes in one session what ordinary brushes leave in a dense coat. Reserve them for breeds with a thick undercoat, without insisting on the same spot.
• The glove, in rubber or with soft nubs, collects dead hair from short-haired dogs and reassures animals that are wary of the brush.

How do you detangle without pulling the hair?

Always in the direction of the coat, lock by lock, starting at the tip and working up to the root. Holding the base of the lock with one hand avoids pulling on the skin. The areas that mat first are the ears, belly, armpits, inner legs and the feathering on the hindquarters: start with them, using a small slicker brush if needed.

On a tight knot, first spray a detangler, leave it to work, then open the knot with a comb before carrying on. Never wet a matted coat without detangling it first: water tightens knots. Our detanglers and coat care products make this work easier, and the Jojoba Magic, Vison Magic or Wooly Warrior care oils also soften the natural bristles of the Prestige brushes.

How often should you brush your dog?

A very short or short coat should be brushed once or twice a week. A long or curly coat needs brushing every other day, or even daily for breeds that mat quickly. During shedding season, in spring and autumn, daily brushing limits hair loss around the house and stops dead hair from building up in the undercoat. A puppy gets used to it all the better if you start young, with short, rewarded sessions.

Brushing is the first coat care, even before the bath: it removes dead hair, airs the coat and lets you spot a tick or skin irritation. For dogs with a long or curly coat, brushing once a week is not enough, as knots form again between sessions. Working on a dirty or damp coat damages it: always brush before the bath, then again once the coat is dry.

Why choose a Ladybel brush?

The Lady Prestige Démêlage and Lady Prestige Douce models combine a 21.4 cm oak handle with natural bristles: firmer boar bristles, which detangle and polish all coats, and softer pig bristles, reserved for fine, long and silky coats, without tearing or breaking the hair. They can be engraved with your companion's name when you order. The Mini carde XS, with a wooden handle and steel pins, comes in two sizes, XS and S, suited to small dogs and cats with fragile coats: the shorter pins and small surface make it possible to work on delicate areas. Each model is rated by our customers on its product page.

These tools are selected by a brand of grooming cosmetics formulated under veterinary supervision: they complement our dog shampoos and care products for complete coat care at home. The whole selection is available individually, for dogs as well as for grooming salons.
