Shampoo for Ragdoll
Ceci est un paragraphe.
This is a paragraph.
When you adopt a cat or a kitten, you take on a real responsibility: its health, its diet and its grooming needs. With a Ragdoll you have little to worry about on the bathing front, since your vet will recommend an occasional bath rather than a frequent one, because of its particular coat.
Grooming your Ragdoll regularly reduces the risk of hairballs and of matting. It also lets you check that the coat stays healthy. The fur is medium length with a little undercoat, and it needs regular brushing because it tends to tangle.
The shampoo has to match those needs, which here means a product for medium length, silky cat hair. Never use a human shampoo: the pH does not match and it risks drying the skin. A gentle shampoo with natural ingredients is ideal. You will find it at Ladybel, a French manufacturer of premium shampoos for dogs, cats and small pets, and the full cat shampoo range is on our category page.
What are the characteristics of the Ragdoll?
The Ragdoll is the very picture of the ideal cat. It comes from the United States and is one of the most sought after breeds. It is deeply affectionate, attached to its owner, and it is not unusual for it to follow that person from room to room all day long. Very sociable, it is happy alongside another pet. It is a beautiful cat with magnificent blue eyes, and it comes in several colours and patterns:
- Seal
- Blue
- Chocolate
- Lilac, the dilution of chocolate
- Red
- Cream
- Colourpoint
- Mitted
- Bicolour
- Tabby
- Tortie
- Torbie
Its coat is long to medium length, silky and exceptionally soft. Depending on genetics, health, environment and diet, it lives for fifteen to twenty years.
It is an intelligent cat that loves to play. Its size makes it particularly appealing to cat enthusiasts, and some individuals are larger than certain dog breeds. The breed is known for its relaxed personality. It suits children, though care is needed since a child can hurt a cat. Easy going, it enjoys the company of other animals.
Where does the Ragdoll come from?
The first Ragdolls were bred in California in the 1960s by a Persian breeder. She raised a white Persian type female called Josephine, which carried a Himalayan coat. Josephine was mated with a long haired Birman, and the resulting cats were large, with a non matting coat and a very balanced temperament. The traits of those two cats define the breed we know today.
The Dayton family bought four Ragdolls from that breeder and set up their own cattery. It was from these breeders that many of the breed's viable characteristics emerged, including four recognisable coat patterns: bicolour, van, mitted and colourpoint. The Daytons took care to breed from what they saw as the darker and the lighter side of their breeding stock, a distinction that rests not only on coat colour pattern but also on facial features and overall build.
In 1971 the founder created the International Ragdoll Cat Association and sought to keep control over Josephine's descendants, imposing constraints on breeders, to the point that one group decided to break away. Several accounts of the breed's birth exist and none can be verified completely. If she created the breed, she could not have carried on without the Dayton family's efforts: their complex breeding programme and their dedication to promoting their cats made the Ragdoll the popular breed it is today.
In the early 1990s, 393 Ragdoll kittens were registered. That number rose to 1 376 in 2003 and has kept growing since. There are now about a hundred breeders worldwide.
Which shampoo for a Ragdoll?
Look for the shampoo that matches your cat's particular needs. It should be made of simple, natural ingredients, and you should avoid products made with artificial colourings, parabens, sulphates and harsh chemicals. If your cat has allergies or sensitivities, be sure to avoid products containing those ingredients. If it has dry, sensitive or itchy skin, look instead for a shampoo with ingredients meant to soothe those problems.
