Shampoo for Norwegian Cat
The Norsk Skogkatt, known in English as the Norwegian Forest Cat, is a magnificent breed from Norway. It resembles the Maine Coon and, until 1938, it was simply a long haired domestic cat. This family cat with its splendid coat makes a wonderful companion: affectionate, gentle and calm.
Its thick medium to long coat, with a woolly undercoat, calls for daily brushing. In summer it moults and loses much of that undercoat; only the tail stays bushy, and tufts of hair show between the pads. Like every cat, the Norwegian grooms itself, but an occasional bath keeps the coat shiny and healthy.
The choice of shampoo has to match what the coat needs, which here means a product for long, silky cat hair. Ladybel, the leading French manufacturer of premium shampoos, makes exactly that. The full range is on our cat shampoo page.
Where does the Norwegian Forest Cat come from?
The Norwegian Forest Cat has existed for a very long time, possibly thousands of years. It is the national cat of Norway. Its precise origin is unclear: it may descend from the Russian Siberian cat, or from long haired cats of Turkey that Scandinavian Vikings brought back to Norway. Legend has it that when the Vikings set off to conquer the world, they took Norwegian Forest Cats aboard to protect the ships from rats. The breed then lived wild and survived Norway's cold, harsh winters on its own.
In 1938 the Norwegian Forest Cat Club was founded in Norway to preserve a breed that was disappearing. By the late 1960s breeders had succeeded in saving it, and an association was created to establish a breed standard. The CFA accepted the Norwegian Forest Cat in 1993, and the American Cat Fanciers Association registered it in 1994.
What are the characteristics of the Norwegian Forest Cat?
The Norwegian is a cat of fine stature, larger than most breeds. Its head is triangular with a strong chin and a muzzle of medium length. Its ears are triangular, with tufts at the tips and between them. Its almond shaped eyes may be any colour. Its legs are long and its tail is bushy, the hind legs slightly longer than the front ones. Its coat is thick and long with a woolly undercoat, and the fur is water repellent. Every coat colour is accepted except the lilac, cinnamon, fawn and chocolate dilutions.
This is a very active and intelligent breed. It has a strong personality and is highly independent: it likes to do what it wants, when it wants. With its sharp claws it loves to climb, even on rocks, and its adventurous streak calls for real attention to its safety. It is a gentle, playful cat. This family cat gets on with everyone, people, dogs and other cats alike.
Which shampoo for a Norwegian Forest Cat?
The long, water repellent coat with its thick undercoat evolved for survival in the cold forests of Norway. To avoid knots, comb or brush the Norwegian a few times a week, and daily in spring during the moult. An occasional bath keeps the hair shiny and healthy.
The shampoo has to match your animal's particular needs: kitten, adult, senior, coat colour and so on. Never use a human shampoo, which does not suit the near neutral pH of a cat's skin. Choose a cat shampoo from Ladybel, a manufacturer of shampoos and cosmetics for animals.
